It was not long after when the Bridgerton family and their guests then assembled for dinner that evening. He then glanced around to see Lady Danbury watching them with that familiar heart-stopping raised-eyebrowed look, and, swallowing uncomfortably, Anthony turned back to Miss Edwina to change the subject to something – anything – else. ‘Indeed,’ Anthony agreed, smiling awkwardly. ‘Yes, it is a beautiful name, is it not?’ Edwina said enthusiastically. ‘Kathani,’ he murmured, and the way he spoke the name almost sounded like a prayer. ‘May I ask, is ‘Kate’ short for ‘Katherine’?’Īnthony’s lips parted. ‘I trust Kate with my life,’ she said simply.Īnthony smiled. ‘My own sister, Daphne, she…well, she found my similar efforts with her last season rather over-bearing.’ ‘And you do not mind that?’ Anthony asked, interested. ‘Kate just wants to be absolutely certain, she only wants the best. ‘You must not take it as a personal offence, my lord,’ Miss Edwina reassured him. ‘And she has not been overly enthusiastic of…well, of…’ ‘As I am sure you are aware, I confess Miss Sharma and I…did not start off our acquaintanceship on the best of terms,’ he said, and he and Miss Edwina exchanged a grimace. Ever since their father had died and he had become viscount, they had seen him as this distant figure, almost…as not quite one of them anymore. Or rather, he felt like they viewed him as separate. He felt separate from his own siblings in that way. But even then…the bond that Miss Edwina described between her and sister…he couldn’t quite relate to it. Out of everyone, he would say he was closest to Benedict. He was close with his family, much more so than most gentlemen in the ton, and he loved them all dearly. ‘I suppose you feel the same way about your own siblings.’Īnthony’s smile faltered slightly, saddened by her words. ‘You love her very much,’ Anthony said, smiling warmly at her. She is my sister,’ she said firmly, ‘regardless of the fact that our birth mothers are not the same.’ ![]() ![]() ‘And Miss Sharma? She is your half-sister, I believe?’ Anthony asked. It sounded like they had lived a remarkable life. She told him of their life in Bombay with relish, and he found himself almost envying the Sharmas. Once he had talked to her fondly of his siblings, he then asked about her family as well and her life in India. She was even passionate about literature, something he could not admittedly relate to, but he asked her questions about her favourite books all the same, and she lit up so endearingly as he encouraged her to speak of them. She had clearly been prepared for a role such as this. As he had kept insisting to his mother over the past few weeks, she truly would make the perfect viscountess. Even when he warned her that, even once married, he would have to spend time away from his home to tend to his business, Miss Edwina assured him that she was adaptable and understood. Miss Edwina expressed herself so agreeably, Anthony could hardly dare to believe his own ears her answers to all his questions were so perfect. He wasn’t exactly having much fun during their conversation, and his laughter was polite and restrained, and entirely false – unlike his bizarre fit of laughter with her sister in the bog earlier this afternoon – and yet that did not matter, not really. Although it was clear that they were both very different people with different interests and hobbies, he and Miss Edwina got on very well, he was pleased to realise. Luckily, it turned out that the conversation was not half as painful as he had feared it would be – indeed, it was nice to finally get a chance to talk to his future intended, and a welcome distraction for him to focus on something other than the thought of his father’s grave. His mother and Lady Danbury were present to chaperone and pretend to concentrate on their embroidery over in the corner of the room while Anthony sat on the settee with his guest of honour and tried to engage himself in conversation with her.
